Rosetta Stone Spanish Reviews

Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin American 1-5 levelsThe philosophy of Rosetta Stone is that learning a language should be fun, easy and effective. Rosetta Stone Spanish course is designed according to the principles of Dynamic Immersion. This method implies teaching Spanish without translation and by surrounding student with words, images and voices of native speakers, all set within a certain context. It means learning naturally or the same way as small children do – intuitively, without grammar explanations or vocabulary lists to memorize.

Does this method work? Well, it is certainly fun to learn Spanish with Rosetta Stone Spanish program and there is proud feeling of great progress you make while you learn. However, adults learn differently as small children and usually need more explanation about the structure of the language. Rosetta Stone Spanish is well designed program for fun Spanish learning, but more serious students might want to look somewhere else.

Pros+ Cons -
  • Extremely easy and simple to use. You will probably do not need any tutorials at all (although you can get them) because program is very intuitive to use.
  • Beautifully designed, simple navigation and interface.
  • Entertaining.
  • Very good for absolute beginners.
  • Image and word association without translation in English. You will progress quickly without hearing a single English word.
  • Track your progress through the entire program. You can focus on your weakest areas like pronunciation or writing.
  • Variety of learning tools to learn the same words or phrases from different angles. Good for both, the visual and audile people: choose to read or to hear the word to pick the corresponding image; you may also listen to the Spanish words and then write down the correct answer.
  • Great for practicing Spanish pronunciation and instant feedback with speech recognition feature.
  • Separate versions for Latin American Spanish and Spanish spoken in Spain.
  • Compatible with Windows and Mac.
  • The biggest weakness is its high price. The level 1 program alone costs almost the same as complete Spanish course from other companies.
  • Few grammar rules and dictionaries. The method is based on intuitive and immersion approach.
  • Little cultural information.
  • Many users note that Rosetta Stone is not as good as other programs for conversational Spanish. Its strength lies is vocabulary building.
  • Some users note that even in level 3 the material is not challenging enough for intermediate learner.

Rosetta Stone Spanish – The Bottom Line

With Rosetta Stone Spanish software your learning will appear easy and fun. The program is especially good for beginners in Spanish. For those with at least some previous training first levels may seem too basic.
You will be immersed in language and will easy learn Spanish words and phrases, but if you want to know detailed grammar rules, this program is not for you. You will neither find Spanish dictionary, translator or word root search. Also, users note that Rosetta Stone is not particularly effective in actual conversational Spanish, but its strength lies in building Spanish vocabulary.
If you don’t mind spending money for entertaining and fun Spanish learning, then go for it. For beginners we recommend to buy the whole set of levels 1,2 & 3  or at least levels 1 & 2. In this way you will be saving money rather than buying each level separately.

I have built a solid foundation
I find RS method quite interesting. It’s as if it’s building up with basic blocks that one can then later combine in a complicated way. ~  Actual user comment from www.english-tes.net/forum, November 2009

I learned little
I have finished Rosetta Stone discs 1-3.. are 4-5 worth it?
I went through the first 3 discs of Rosetta Stone Latin Spanish. It seems like I know so much.  …I turn to the spanish channel and I still can’t really understand anything. I realize that I am still just a super beginner. ~ Actual user comment from forums.tomisimo.org, February 2009First levels too basic, later need additional learning materials.
It is very, very basic up to level two, and pricely…and it may not be quite right for anyone who had any significant training in Spanish already.
.. it is fantastic when used together with some basic language training to get basics about grammar down and to get some additional vocabulary going.  ~ Actual user comment from forums.tomisimo.org, February 2009

Poor performance in real life
The program has been cleverly designed to make people think that they have learned a language andyou get this feeling of success ..  Unfortunately, when it comes to use the language in real life, users realize how poor is their performance.~ Actual user comment from orbislingua.com, December 2008

Good for basics, but not for fluent speaking

If your goal is just to reach a level of survival … at the end of the 3 levels you should be able to do it. But, if your goal is to fluently ..state extensive opinions… Rosetta Stone can not take you to that point. ~Actual user comment from orbislingua.com, September 2008

Overpriced
In my opinion… It’s overpriced. ~ Actual user comment from orbislingua.com, September 2008

Not enough speaking practice and too easy
It doesn’t seem to give me enough speaking practice …. and it is a little too easy.  ~ Actual user comment from orbislingua.com, January, 2009
